Monaco / Cap d'Ail

Cap d'Ail is the town in France which borders Monaco, on the western side. Our hotel was on the border, when you crossed the street you entered Monaco. In taking the train from Nice (which is where we got off of the overnight from Paris) we thought we should get off at Cap d'Ail. This was a big mistake as it gave us a half hour walk to the hotel. We should have gotten off at Monaco (and the overnight may have even stopped there).

We stayed at the Marriot. The people there were very nice, and went out of their way to accomodate us. We really appreciated them beating up the folks at the Marriot outside Paris to guarentee us non-smoking rooms. Neither the internet nor the American Marriot group was able to do this.

A somewhat official web site of the Principality can be seen here.

Monaco is much more expensive than Marina and I remember it being. We were there in 1981, and I think that their inflation has been stronger than ours and the dollar is much weaker. Whereas in 1981 we spent a lot of time at the blackjack tables, this time we spent less than a half hour and quickly lost our stake. The lowest minimum bet table we could find was 5 Euros.

Despite that, we did spend time relaxing and playing tourist.

We went to the aquarium, the Exotic Gardens and Caves, the Rose Garden that the Prince built in memory of Princess Grace, and the model ship museum. Each of these links will take you to the pictures associated with our visit.

I also have some general tourist pictures here:

A view of the area that is the palace (which they call Monaco-Ville)

Both of these pictures from the top of the aquarium.
