This was our hike in day. We awoke at 5:20 am at the motel, had a quick breakfast and were on the road to the parking lot at Hualapai Hilltop.
At about 8:30 am we left the parking lot for our hike in. At 11:05, we stopped for lunch, and my GPS said we were at 3.96 miles.
At 12:36 pm, we made it to the Cataract Canyon Junction and turned towards the village of Supai.
By 1:20 pm we were at the village of Supai, where Brian checked our group in.
At 2:54 pm we arrived at the campground where Dave was waiting. My GPS said we had traveled 8.98 miles. The topo maps says we dropped around 2450 feet in elevation.
Our tents were pitched next to the the creek, and in the afternoon, the skies opened up an a waterfall formed where none had been seen in all of our guides trips down here. The waterfall flattened our tent.
To the credit of REI, the poles were bent and had to be straightened, but for the most part our gear inside the tent was dry.
Now the pictures from Monday
First 7 pictures stitched together as a panorama taken from the parking lot
Looking down at the trail:
(The trail that you see is before it turns right, in this picture, and enters the wash that is normally dry)
And the beginning of the trail (once you get on it, it is not so bad):
and a mule/horse train coming up.
Bear rock.
My favorite, looks better at full resolution.
From the village of Supai. Note the mail box is in colors that have
not been used since the 1960s.
Navajo Falls (better shots on Thursday's page).
Havasu Falls from the trail. Note how blue the water in the pool is
now.......
Our tent, pre-waterfall
Our luggage and food
This one from Brig showing the waterfall in progress.
Here is Havasu falls after the deluge. Note how muddy the water is now.
It did clear up in a day.
The top picture, courtesy of Brig from the Tonto Bench trail the next
day, is a view of the camp without the fall.. Our tent can be seen in the
bottom center and the cliff where the fall appeared is from the trees on
up. The bottom picture is from camp level showing the cliff.
And so ends our first day.
