Day 1 - December 16 - San Jose
After breakfast, we transferred by taxi to the Hotel Bougainvillea.
This is the hotel where the whole group is to spend the first night.
Here is a view from the Courtyard:
The hotel has a couple of acres of tropical gardens. We wandered around
and took some pictures
In the afternoon, Marina, Don, and David went into downtown San
Jose. We wandered around downtown, but did not buy
anything. We then started to head towards the Jade Museum, and allowed
ourselves to get hustled by a local, that escorted us to the museum and
gave us a tour of the museum (we paid his local's admission) with a
running monologue.
We left the center of the city and returned to the hotel where we
played a game of hearts. Then we headed down to the bar where I had my
first Imperial, beer brewed in Costa Rica. We played cards until it was
time for the group meeting. Not all of the group was there at that
point, just our family, Nancy, Patrick and Greg. Jimmy (our guide) told
us what would be happening day by day. Most important, we had to be
ready to go at 6:45am the next morning. We were to have breakfast on
the road.
Pictures from the gardens of the Bourgainvillea:

And then a couple of pictures from the Jade Museum:
Yes, the wood carvings in the back are what they look like. Fertility
symbols were important before the Spaniards came.
