Day 3 - December 18 - Tortuguero
We got up at 5:30am to take a motor tour of one of the canals,
Cano Harold We got up this early as that is the best time to view the
wild life. We saw White Faced Monkeys, Iguanas, numerous types of
birds, Caymans.
Here is a map of our route:
The part of the map that shows "Tree Blockage" used to be the main
route of these tours. The tree fell this past season blocking off the
larger canal. The tours now go on the smaller canal as shown on the map.
The "Sign" is this picture here:
After we returned to the lodge, we had breakfast, then the kayaks were
loaded into a motor boat, and we returned to the start of the Cano
Harold, and then got into the kayaks and went up the canal. We went
much further than we did earlier in the morning, kayaking for 1 hour up
the canal. On the way back, we kayaked all the way to the lodge.
In the afternoon, we went to the ocean. We did not swim as we were
warned off. There are sharks and barracudas in the water. As our guide
Jimmy said, if the locals don't swim, you should not swim either. At
4pm we walked into the small town of Tortuguero and did a bit of
souvenir shopping.
After dinner, Mike and some of the others in the group went back to the
ocean beach and made a campfire.

What the canal looks like
Wide angle view from the motor boat, and there is a turtle in the center
Then back at the Mawamba Lodge
More on these frogs on day 4
The amount of color variation is amazing, yet on a broad leaf they are
hard to find.
The lodge may be rustic, but it does have amenities
