Sweden – Day 7 in Stockholm

Days 7 and 8 were spent in Stockholm.  We didn’t get to some of the places we wanted to see, so maybe next time.

We visited the City Hall (rebuilt fairly recently after a fire, but with an older feel).  Didn’t go inside because everything need a tour and tickets were sold out for several hours by the time we got there, but here are some pictures on the outside of the building.

Our first choice of places to visit was the Vasa Museum.  The Vasa sank on her maiden voyage in sight of Stockholm on August 10, 1628, likely due to a design problem.  There was an official investigation at the time, but no blame was placed, likely because the king spent time dabbling in the process and well, its good to be the king. The original ship was brightly colored and there is a model showing how she looked on the day she sailed.  The actual ship (about 98% original) was raised from the sea floor after 333 years, and carefully restored.  She is in a large building with many viewing balconies and is well worth a visit.

We also visited the Viking Museum which is very near the Vasa Museum.  This was fun, but not really photoworthy.
